on 1) Gov. Brown's 2011-12 budget and 2) proposal to realign state and county services.
Realignment can work ... if it's done right.
SEIU members throughout California want to ensure that the services we provide are delivered in the most efficient and effective way possible. We know that this recession is going to force California to make hard decisions and rethink how we provide services.
The proposal to move some services from the state to the local level has the potential to help make government work better and preserve vital public services from deeper cuts, but only if it’s done right. "Done right" means:
Establishing minimum standards for realigned services
Including dedicated funding for programs
Ensuring quality services by maintaining good wages, benefits, and job protections for the workers who provide them
Services and funding must be maintained, taxpayers and workers must be protected, and local governments must be held accountable.
If we pull together and make the right decisions now, California can get through this crisis and preserve – even strengthen – our vital public services.
